A Little Help?
I normally don't involve myself with online petitions, the ones I've seen in the past hardly ever make a difference whether I sign them or not. But one came to my attention yesterday that I couldn't pass up taking part in, and seeing as how I watched it jump from 137 signatures to 315 signatures in a matter of hours, something told me that there may be potential in it after all.
As some of you may already know, whether through keeping track of me on Facebook or reading the recently posted article on the forum. The Minnesota Zoo is planning on permanently relocating their last two Bottlenose Dolphins; Semo and Allie, this fall.
The zoo appealed to the Minnesota State Legislature in the hopes of obtaining money for much needed repairs to their Discovery Bay Dolphin Stadium. The state granted them $4 Million Dollars, however, yesterday it was announced that instead of bringing Allie and Semo back to the zoo once the renovations are complete, they will permanently end the dolphin exhibit.
The Minnesota Legislature claims they were the victim of a "bait and switch", though the zoo denies it. They intend to use the money to repair the tanks but replace the dolphins with something else (seals and sea lions have been mentioned)
ANYWAY, like many Minnesota Zoo regulars, I am beyond peeved, and more so hurt than anything. I planned on interning with the Zoo's Marine Mammal Department once I transferred up to Minnesota State University in the hopes of gaining experience working alongside dolphins, and even potentially making a career out of it.
I ask all of you for help, I didn't create this petition but support it 100% nonetheless. The Zoo claims they can't maintain a stable dolphin hierarchy with only two animals and that finding suitable dolphins from other parks is an "exceedingly difficult task". Many of us find this hard to believe given how quickly and easily dolphins and whales are transferred from park to park in the United States Alone.
This Petition Asks the Zoo to reconsider their decision to permanently end the Dolphin Exhibit. Semo is nearly 50 years old and has made the zoo his home for nearly 22 years. Common sense dictates that a move might not go over well for him. It essentially asks the zoo to weigh all options. We all want whats best for the dolphins, but we feel that not all options have been weighed.
Please sign to keep the dolphins in Minnesota!
And spread the word!
