-- Dickerson Park Zoo officials in Springfield hoped for a week with two giraffe calf births, but were sadly disappointed Saturday. Zoo officials announced the death of a female calf in the womb.
The 19 year old female, Gidget, went into labor Saturday, zoo officials said in a news release Saturday. When progress was slow, veterinarians examined Gidget and determined the calf was dead inside the mother's uterus. Zoo staff helped deliver the female calf and determined it was underdeveloped.
Zoo officials say Gidget has successfully given birth nine times since 1997.
Earlier in the week, a male calf was born to the female giraffe, Kimili. Zoo fans helped named the calf Stretch, Jr., or S.J., after his sire.
