From a shark’s point of view, you probably look like meat on the hook. The only safe way to find out is at Mystic Aquarium, where Crittercam will put you remotely aboard a shark’s back for the ride of a lifetime.
An amazing traveling exhibition developed by the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C., Crittercam is thrilling people every day at Mystic. Along with the perspective of a fierce shark, Crittercam will also show you what an Antarctic penguin, a brown bear, a humpback whale, a housecat and a sea turtle see when they’re making the rounds.
Crittercam attaches wireless video cameras to animals of all shapes and sizes, in particular sea creatures whose lives underwater have long been one of the biggest mysteries of science. Known as POV -- for point-of-view -- in the movie trade, the feeds from Crittercam show viewers how whales go fishing, how penguins dive into freezing water and what your cat does when you’re not home.
Educational and experiential, the exhibition includes narrated and captioned video, interviews with scientists, touch-screen monitors, ocean artifacts and even a chance for kids to see themselves as a penguin sees them.
But it’s not all show and tell. Crittercam enables scientists to better protect these animals and their environments by learning their ways and helping others understand their needs and natures.
Documenting such behaviors as the incredible teamwork of “bubble fishing” by pods of humpback whales brings new insight into animal behaviors and greatly increases our knowledge of the ecosystem.
Crittercam is an experience you will never forget, and it’s at Mystic Aquarium, the only aquarium in Connecticut accredited by the national Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and just a short distance from home.
